OPRP Episode 039 – apps, the social media bubble and your blog as your journal – 07.09.10

The Online PR Podcast with Mark Polson of Code Greene and Pete Codella of Codella Marketing this week addresses iPhone and Facebook applications, the idea proliferated across the Web that perhaps we’re in the midst of a social media bubble, and the concept of preserving your life’s story using social media.

Applications

Mark and Pete discuss different approaches to creating apps, both for mobile devices and for Facebook. They talk about what works well, the costs involved and ask for listener feedback to share their experiences.

Social Media Bubble

There’s been a lot published this past week or so about the idea of a social media bubble, similar to the dot-com bubble. Most of the discussion originated from a blog by Umair Haque on the Harvard Business Review. Check it out, listen to what Pete and Mark have to say about it, and let us know your thoughts.

Life History

Mark and Pete also discuss the concept of a digital legacy. With social media and microblogging updates people have the ability to share with the world and loved ones some or all the details of their life.

Pete pointed out how he’s keeping tabs on his parent’s current trek from upstate New York to southern Utah, where they plan to build their retirement home, via his sister’s daily updates on Facebook.

Perhaps one day our descendants will speak to their computers to ask for a life history of their great-great-grandfather and the computer will provide tons of stories, pictures and videos, practically bringing the person to life. Who knows?
