OPRP Episode 019 – 11.13.09
The Online PR Podcast with Mark Polson of Code Greene and Pete Codella of Codella Marketing today features a discussion on a number of different topics.
First
Social media policies — What are best practices? What are other companies and organizations doing? Who’s leading the way?
Pete and Mark discuss the Social Media Governance site which currently includes links to 107 documents of social media policies from many different organizations.
It’s a great resource to see what others are doing for their social media policies.
Second
Ownership of online content — We discuss the implications raised by a recent Jeremiah Owyang article titled, Your Company May Own Your Tweets, Pokes, and YouTube Videos.
Jeremiah welcomed attorney Lisa Borodkin who addressed the contract law and copyright law aspects of the discussion.
Basically, some employee agreements state that the company owns its employees’ creative works. Period. Imagine the implications for your personal blog, photos, video, etc. Unless you carve out some protections for personal online content, your employer could own it all.
We highly recommend reading Jeremiah’s post and the discussion that follows.
Third
Google Sidewiki — How would you like to be able to leave a comment on a static Web site? With Sidewiki you can. You install the Google toolbar, then use Sidewiki to add your own comments to Web sites, regardless of whether or not their site allows comments.
Again, there are some pretty dynamic implications for this tool. Consider how you’d respond to criticism placed on your site, like unwanted graffiti. And think of how supportive compliments or praise could influence you and other site visitors.
Fourth
Social media trends — Mark and Pete discuss the five trends identified by the blog Extanz.
The article, 5 Big Fat Social Media Trends, provides some good insight into the direction things are headed. Pete and Mark concur with the author’s commentary.
