Just what is an API, and what does it do?

We brought in the big guns — metaphorically speaking of course — with Mark’s Code Greene partner, Mac Newbold. Mac is one of the brightest minds in Web programming. In fact, the word genius is probably aptly applied.

Mark and Pete talk with Mac about APIs, also known as Web hooks, and how organizations can use them to create brand awareness or foster a greater sense of virtual community.

As Mac explains, an API hooks things together online.

We talk about Facebook and Twitter and their APIs.

Pete brought up the fact that Facebook now allows fan pages to link directly to Twitter accounts, so when you update your Facebook status or other Facebook applications, an update can also be published in your Twitter account.

Mac pointed out that an API is useful, but should be used with a solid strategy, not just because it’s available.

APIs, done correctly, are mutually beneficial for both parties, such as Facebook and Twitter.
